  • ** QMUL Honorary Fellow and Antennas Group Visiting Research Associate is the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics Recipient - Professor Charles Kao **
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Honorary Fellow Professor Charles Kao for work on fibre optic technology in the 1970s, which he carried out whilst holding the position of Visiting Research Associate at the Antennas Research Group, Queen Mary University of London. Click here for more news on QMUL official website
Members of the Antenna Group were especially pleased to learn of the award of the 2009 Noble Prize for Physics to Dr Charles Kao CBE FRS FREng as he had served as an Honorary Research Associate in the Group between 1968-1971. When Professor Peter Clarricoats joined Queen Mary College in 1968 he formed the Electromagnetics Group which later was renamed The Antenna Group. He held regular discussions with Charles and a few others at the College to discuss all aspects of optical fibres. This was one of the main activities of the Group at that time. In 2008 Charles added to his many honours Fellowship of Queen Mary . Charles also presented a series of lectures to the Group on Physical Optics and several of Peter’s research students obtained their Phd in optical fibre research. These including Dr K. B. Chan who was made a Fellow of the College in 1998 in recognition of his major contribution to College Alumni activity in Hong Kong.
