Travel Support for Young Researchers

The Network network has some funding to assist young researchers, such as PhD students, postdocs/RAs, or new Lecturers, for

• UK-based researchers to travel to conferences (UK or overseas)
• UK-based researchers to visit research groups (UK or overseas)

UK research groups may also apply for

• overseas-based researchers to visit UK researchers

We regret that direct applications from researchers based outside the UK cannot be considered.

Funding available to the network is limited. Applicants for overseas travel or visits to UK research labs of are encouraged to apply to other sources of funding to help towards the cost of their travel, including their own organization. Other sources of funding to consider include: British Academy (e.g. Overseas Conference Grants); Royal Society; Royal Academy of Engineering (e.g. International Travel Grants scheme).

Successful applicants will be asked to write a brief report about their visit, for distribution via the Network web site. Support will normally be limited to max £500 per case. Actual travel expenditure incurred, up to the awarded limit, will be reimbursed after the travel against submission of receipts.

In considering the relative priority of applications for conference travel, we will consider issues such as (in no particular order):

• Likely future benefit to the applicant
• Relevance of the applicant's research area
• Importance of the conference
• Balance of support to different conferences
• Presentation to be given by candidate
• Other visits arranged (especially for distant travel)
• Availability of other funding

Applications will be considered at any time, but we cannot consider retrospective applications.

Please apply at least 8 weeks before you intend to travel, so that we have time to consider your application and inform you of our decision before you make any travel arrangements.

To make the best use of travel support funding, young researchers applying for funding are expected to make use of the most cost effective method of travel and accommodation.

UK-based young researchers

UK-based young researchers should download and complete the application form, available in one of the following formats:

Post your completed application form, together with a letter of support (on headed notepaper) from your supervisor or manager, to Mrs Theresa Willis (address below).

Other travel support

For other travel support, including overseas visitors invited to visit UK research groups, must be made by the UK host laboratory. Please outline the case for proposed visit, and send to Mrs Theresa Willis at the address below.

Academic Networking

The Network can also consider applications for informal meetings, joint proposal meetings, and other academic networking opportunities. Funding requested could include:

• International researcher visit to the UK
• Visit to other UK or international institution
• Mini-sabbatical for a short visit
• Exchange visit to another UK or international laboratory
• Meeting to discuss possible collaboration
• Meeting to prepare a joint funding proposal

Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and can be for established researchers as well as young researchers.

To apply, write a "Case for Support" of no more than 1 page of A4, including funding requested, and send to Mrs Theresa WIllis at the address below.

The ICA Research Network can also contribute towards the organization of meetings and workshops in ICA/BSS or related areas, where such meetings fit with the aims of the Network.
