Music Analysis and Synthesis (ELEM035)

  • I teach and coordinate this module of our new MSc in Digital Music Processing.
  • This course introduces the students to common methods for sound generation. It presents in-depth studies of general approaches to the low-level analysis of audio signals, and the use of these methods for synthesis applications. It also concentrates on the semantic analysis of music signals, by presenting methods for the extraction of information related to the rhythm, melody, harmony and instrumentation of recorded music.
  • Topics include: fundamentals of music analysis and synthesis, additive and subtractive synthesis, AM and FM synthesis,  sound sampling and physical modelling, sinusoidal modelling synthesis, the phase vocoder, onset detection and beat tracking, pitch estimation and advanced topics in music analysis

Music and Speech Processing (ELEM021)

  • From 2003 until 2005 I taught a few lectures and coordinated lab practices in this module of our MSc in Digital Signal Processing.
  • This course aims to introduce students to the application of Digital Signal Processing to Music and to Speech. The application-oriented nature of the syllabus will reinforce the theory learned in other courses through lectures and laboratories.
