Studying musical performance with the help of spectrum analysis

Professor Daniel Leech-Wilkinson & Dr. Renee Timmers,
CHARM - Centre for the History and Analysis of Recorded Music
Music Department, King's College London

Wednesday 11 January 2006, 4:00pm, Room 105

Abstract

The talk will show methodologies for the investigation of expressive musical performance using spectrum analysis software. In particular we will look at the singing of songs by Schubert and at the ways in which singers draw on speech intonation to give meaning to musical events. We hope that the examples will suggest useful ways of developing visualisation software so that this kind of musical research can be done more effectively.
