Performing Brahms: an analysis of similarities in cello playing styles on record

Abstract

Similarities in cello playing styles will be comparatively analysed in the selected legendary cellists’ performances of Brahms’s Cello Sonata in F major on record. By investigating performances comparatively, I intend to discover the origin of particular performance styles and their evolutionary process through pedagogical lineage and artists’ perception of the piece. I will measure and analyse performance parameters, such as tempo and dynamic modifications at the levels at which expert performance operates, using computational tools, and will consider similarities in cello playing styles statistically.
