Impulse noise in xDSL systems: Non-Gaussian noise in the real world
Steve MacLaughlin, University of Edinburgh
27th February, 2002

This talk will discuss impulse noise in xDSL systems, causes, statistics and modelling techniques. It will propose a suitable method for simulating impulses with appropriate amplitude, spectral, and inter-arrival characteristics.

The statistics used to develop the parameters of this model are based on statistics derived from observations of impulse noise on the telephone networks of British Telecom and Deutsche Telekom.

Finally some results will be presented of the impact of impulse noise in xDSL systems which have been derived from an analysis based on the model of impulse noise developed.
