ELE104
Professional Applications (Level: 4 Credits: 15)

Students are organised in teams of 4 or 5 students. The teams are identical to the tutorial groups. Self-study, teamwork, group tutorials and personal tutorials are essential to this module.

Engineering in Society
Public speaking skills: As a team the students prepare and give a presentation. The topics for presentations and in-class essay are chosen from issues related to Engineering in Society. The presentations discuss the ethical, social and environmental concerns raised.

Written communication: Short writing exercises and Questions and Answers sessions follow all the presentations. At the end of the module the students write an in-class essay on a question related to the issues presented and discussed in class.

Personal Portfolio
Learning how to learn: Students evaluate their learning strategy and improve their learning performance through a series of exercises done during self-study time and regular tutorials with their personal tutor. Students evaluate their abilities when working on their own and as part of a team.

Personal and Professional Development: Students put together an ongoing PDP folder identifying personal and professional strengths. Students set goals and plan action to do with exploring potential careers. Students make use of information technology especially to develop research methods and advanced word processing.

Presentation Skills
At the end of the module, each participant should have a greater understanding of presenting their ideas in way that is :

  • clear, concise and well structured
  • catches the attention of the audience or readership.
