MSc in Multimedia Systems Technology

Introduction to MST Programme Structure Programme Content Entry  Requirements How to Apply Further Information

Introduction

Multimedia is the convergence and integration of various types of digital media, including images, sound, video, text, graphics and animations. The MSc in Multimedia Systems Technology responds to a growing skills shortage in industry for engineers with a high level of training in multimedia technologies, and in particular to support broadcast, entertainment, surveillance, gaming, internet, communications and consumer industries.

The MSc in Multimedia Systems Technology focuses on digital signal processing and multimedia communications, and includes courses on Image & Video Processing, Music & Speech processing, Digital Broadcasting and Multimedia Data Retrieval. An emphasis in placed on a learn-by-doing approach which gives the students the opportunity to put in practice what they learn in the classroom.

Students learn from experienced MST professionals through guest lectures and seminars that complement the taught modules. Furthermore, students are given the opportunity to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom with a practical project in connection with the industry.

Applications are invited from students who wish to enhance and specialise their skills in the Multimedia Systems Technology areas, and also for industrialists with some experience of working with signal processing in the IT sector, who wish to obtain a formal qualification.

This Programme is specifically intended to respond to a growing skills shortage in industry for engineers with a high level of training in multimedia technologies, and in particular to support broadcast, entertainment, surveillance, gaming, internet, communications and consumer industries.

Programme Structure

The MSc in Multimedia Systems Technology runs full-time over a 12-month period commencing typically in the second half of September. Eight taught module units are divided into two 12-week semesters.

The eight module units involve lectures, problem solving coursework, and practical sessions. Lectures are used to introduce principles and methods and also to illustrate how they can be applied in practice. Coursework allows students to develop their skills in problem solving and to gain practical experience. Practical sessions provide students with guidance and help while solving a problem. These lessons take the form of exercise classes and programming laboratories that allow the students to learn-by-doing in order to complement what they learn in the lectures.

In May, each student selects and commences a final project which will be submitted in the form of a dissertation at the end of August.

The assessment of the taught module units takes place through a written examination and practical coursework. The final project is examined on the basis of a written report, a formal oral presentation, and a demonstration of the piece of software or hardware developed by the student, which takes place at the beginning of September.
