Structure and Assessment

All Advanced MSc Programmes (except the MSc by Research) have the following structure:

  • eight taught programme modules, worth 15 credits each and;
  • a project, worth 60 credits.

See the separate page for the structure of the MSc by Research.

For most programmes there are no options. The  modules that you take are fixed by the programme or pathway that you are following.

In certain cases, it is possible for you to change your programme of study to another compatible programme in the first semester. A change of programme is at the discretion of the Programme Manager.

Modes of Study

Full-time study takes one calendar year (12 months), starting in late September.

You will take eight taught modules(four per semester) between September and April with all examinations taking place in May-June.  For MSc students this is then followed by the project from May to the beginning of September.

Distance learning (for students in the UK) takes two calendar years, starting in late September, and is available for the following programmes only:

The distance learning approach comprises recorded lectures made available over the Internet with web-based study material. You will attend Queen Mary for some periods, for such matters as induction and tutorial support, in addition to times for examinations and discussions with your project supervisor. You will need a PC and a broadband Internet connection.

For more information, see the Distance Learning page.

* subject to approval

Distance-learning (for students overseas) is available and is operated in co-operation with selected overseas partners, currently in Macau, Hong Kong and Portugal.

For more information, see the Distance Learning page.

MSc Projects

Projects are either significantly development-based or else have a research focus and are expected to make use of techniques that are at the leading edge of the field. Projects may be carried out in industry, jointly supervised by a member of academic staff.

For more details, see ELEM010: MSc Project.
