The Department of Electronic Engineering

The Department started over a hundred years ago and has always enjoyed a reputation for excellence in world class research. Originally in power and high voltage, we moved to embrace telecommunications, the hardware of computers and then increasingly the software needed to apply computers to engineering applications. This is, for example, where many novel microwave antennas have been designed for satellites and where fuzzy logic was first used for industrial control.

Now, we concentrate on the applications of computers and information technology to electronics and telecommunications ... the technologies underlying the worldwide explosive growth in the Internet and eCommerce.

As a research-active department, we have strong links with industry, within the UK and internationally. Currently, we hold many UK Research Council, European Union, and industrial research grants in the areas of antennas, telecommunications, intelligent systems, and signal processing. The Department has a full range of modern laboratories and equipment, for both teaching and research, including an Internet router lab for undergraduate and postgraduate project work, and an important laboratory for carrying out antenna tests under clean conditions on satellites prior to launch.

The wide range of research interests characterises the policy of the Department – we encourage excellence and innovation in whatever field it arises. All our research groups do work of international importance … if you join us as an undergraduate you will be exposed to the very latest concepts and ideas.
