Research Interests
Dr Eliane L. Bodanese is conducting research on wireless networks and intelligent systems for control and management of networks. She has worked on middleware development for distributed systems and applying intelligent software agents for managing radio resources in cellular networks, which was a precursor work in the use of agent technology in wireless systems. She is also conducting research on Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in wireless networks, intelligent mechanisms for heterogeneous wireless environments, communication support for emergency situations, and context aware wireless sensor networks.
Research with IndustryEPSRC Industrial CASE Award in collaboration with BT -
Automatic Techniques for Pervasive Sensor Environments BT Research Laboratories at Adastral Park in the UK (Dr. George Bilchev,
Head of Sensor Networks Group, BT) has established research collaboration
with Queen Mary, University of London (Dr Eliane L. Bodanese). The main
goal of the PhD Research linked to this award is to build a framework
inside a Pervasive Sensor Environment (PSE) which combines context aware
information from the sensor networks, applications and policy components,
and use this information to reconfigure the PSE network in order to
maximise the efficiency of the delivery of data according to the overall
aim of the PSE. International research collaboration
In the beginning of 2006, an advisory group was formed with the aim of identifying and developing relevant opportunities for Indo-UK collaborations. The advisory group was composed of key UK universities and Indian Institutes of Technologies, also BT (UK), BT (India) and prominent Indian companies as Wipro and Infosys. Both UK and Indian governments were involved. The objective was to engage in concrete steps for the creation of a framework for research collaboration between India and UK in the area of Next Generation Networks (NGN) and Information Communication Technology (ICT).Dr Bodanese has led QMUL in this initiative. A series of technical workshops held in India and UK followed and the
size of the consortium grew to 22 Indian-UK industry and academic partners.
With the support from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council (EPSRC), UK Trade and Investment (UK-TI) and the Foreign and
Commonwealth Office (FCO), the IU-ATC was created in 2007 with an agenda
to support joint research, collaborative PhD, and Post Doctoral projects
in breakthrough research into fixed-wireless networks, fault-tolerant
communications infrastructures, and networked ICT systems and applications
between both countries. The consortium has already attracted £148K of funding from the highly
competitive and prestigious UK-India Education and Research Initiative
(UKIERI) to establish the first-ever India-UK Virtual Graduate Research
School (VGRS) between both countries. The UKIERI supports travel funds
for the mobility of collaborative PhD and research visits. The VGRS
has already attracted and committed over £1.5million to create opportunities
for twenty three PhD scholarships and sixteen industrial internship
positions at BT, InfoSys, Sasken and Wipro between the consortium partners
in both countries over the next 4 years. The PhD scholarships are being
provided by the academic partners: Ulster University, QMUL, Southampton,
Surrey, Bristol, UCL, IIT Madras, IIT Mumbai, IIT Delhi and IISc Bangalore.
BT is also providing significant support through PhD scholarships and
industrial internships for project partners. The VGRS is a reality and
the first concrete steps of the IU-ATC. The VGRS will ensure the rapid
transfer of breakthrough ideas and technology through research collaboration. The networking of IU-ATC also has been funded by the EPSRC INTERACT
5 Programme with India. Dr Bodanese has led QMUL in this initiative. The engagement and commitment
has guaranteed QMUL’s active and valuable participation. The IU-ATC
will bring more possibilities of research collaborations to QMUL and
improve even more the international visibility of the excellent research
capabilities of QMUL. To find out more contact Dr Eliane Bodanese or visit the following
